In the spring, there were IBOAI and Amway 60th Anniversary celebrations. In June, we hosted productive and fast-paced IBOAI Board meetings. In mid-June, top IBO Leaders gathered at an extraordinary NAGC in Newport Beach, California. On June 23, I flew to Michigan to meet new Platinums in person as they toured the IBOAI offices at NPC. Throughout these travels, no matter where or what I experienced in the presence of IBOs and Amway executives, there was a common thread.
We are a Business about people, built on a solid foundation. Even if we speak different languages, we communicate through smiles, handshakes, and hugs, and we share the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship. We continue to grow our Business by helping people build better lives.
The IBOAI is thankful for the support of IBOs throughout North America. We are grateful for our strong working relationship with Amway that continues to grow. There are many great things ahead for the Business and the Field, and we are very optimistic about the future.
Mark your calendars! Qualified Platinums and above are eligible to vote in the upcoming 2020 IBOAI Board election, September 23 through October 7. Your IBOAI Board is here to represent all IBOs. Vote for the candidates of your choice; make your voice heard!
All the Best,
Howie Danzik, Chairman of the IBOAI
Sixty Years Strong: IBOAI® Celebrates in Grand Style with Special Guests
On April 17, 2019 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, it was a fabulous evening of smiles, laughter, hugs and handshakes. Conversation flowed for hours among families and old friends – current and former IBOAI Board members, key Amway executives, and special guests of the five Founding Families. This was a special night to celebrate and honor the genius and vision of the Founding Families as well as the passion and commitment of those who continue to make the Amway Business the best in the world.
A flourishing garden theme served as the perfect backdrop for the 60th Anniversary Celebration. Beautiful, fresh floral displays and a floral photo wall of pink roses, yellow mums, and blue hydrangeas added vibrance to the Welcome Reception in the IBOAI offices. Lavish floral arrangements and strings of white lights transformed the Pantlind Ballroom into an enchanted garden for the elegant dinner and awards presentation. Even the dessert reception was punctuated with the radiant spirit and sweet fragrance of fresh flowers.
Throughout the Welcome Reception, the IBOAI Board members and guests shared smiles, reminisced, and caught up with old and new friends. The professional photos against a colorful wall of fresh flowers were a big hit. In the meeting rooms, photo boards displayed Board members and Amway executives during meetings and events. The original 1959 charter outlining the purpose and mission of the Association was showcased in the AWA Board Room and a popular topic of conversation. A Memorial Table paid tribute to IBO leaders who have passed – Bill Britt, Jim Dornan, Ron Puryear, and Dexter Yager. Historic Amway products on display prompted many great stories.
In addition to current and former IBOAI Board members, special guests included acclaimed members of the Founding Families – DeVos, Van Andel, Hansen, Victor, and Dutt. Several Amway executives also attended: Candace Matthews, Regional President of the Americas and Europe, John Parker, Chief Sales Officer, Jim Ayres, ANA Managing Director, Rajneesh Chopra, ANA Vice President of Sales, and Jim Payne, former Amway Regional President. Rajneesh commented, “It is an honor and privilege to be part of this wonderful celebration. Sixty years wouldn’t have been possible without such distinguished IBO leaders.”
Howie Danzik, IBOAI Chairman, welcomed guests to dinner, expressing excitement in celebrating the rich history of the Business, the great Founding Families’ vision, and excitement for the future. Following a prayer, guests enjoyed delicious cuisine and each other’s company.
Jody Victor, IBOAI Governance & Oversight Chairman, recalled the very early days with Rich, Jay, Fred Hansen, Joe Victor, and Jere Dutt – and his fond memories. Jody said, “Rich and Jay were heroes to my parents – and heroes to many others. You’re all heroes here tonight – committed to the Business and helping people, giving your time and talent to the IBOAI Board, growing your Business into a family Business. We’d like to honor the family of a rising star I presented the President’s Award to in 1990. Tonight, two of his sons are here to accept this special award for the Dexter Yager family. Thank you for all your family has done to make this Business bigger and brighter!”
Bob Andrews, IBOAI officer and Executive Committee member, expressed gratitude for the Founding Families and their wisdom in “building a solid foundation of enduring values and principles we live by and continue to pass on. Without these five families we wouldn’t be here.”
Bill Hawkins, IBOAI Governance & Oversight, explained that the IBOAI wanted to recognize each of the Founding Families with a one-of-a-kind award, a commemorative 60th Anniversary coin.
He shared his personal Rich DeVos story and mentioned everyone who encountered the man had a meaningful “Rich story.” Accepting the award, Doug DeVos spoke about how families stick together through tough times, whether personal or business-related. And how appreciative the DeVos family is of the support and kindness everyone has offered them. “We’re tremendously honored by this award and grateful. You’re like family! We have 60 years together and that’s a good start.” Dan DeVos added, “We are honored to be here tonight, talking about old times and making new memories. Can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done and will do!”
As Bob Andrews spoke about two men, Rich and Jay, who were so different yet so complimentary to each other, heads began to nod across the room. He described Jay as “so smart, you could practically see the wheels turning inside his head. He navigated the Business through some difficult times and we learned from him.” Steve Van Andel commented on family as foundation of the Business and said, “It is an honor to be recognized and be a part of your family.” Dave Van Andel talked about how Rich and Jay “set something in motion, believed in what they were doing, and it captured the attention of many people. It changed their lives – and all of ours. Because of what these two men did, we’re able to celebrate 60 years in the Business!” When Jay’s daughter Barb (Van Andel) Gaby took the mic, she was quick to clarify, “My father was certainly smart, but the real brains belonged to my mother, Betty. She taught me so much about being a businesswoman and a mother. My guess is that most of the successful Businesses represented here tonight have a strong businesswoman and wife working beside their husbands.” The audience responded enthusiastically.
The Hansen, Victor, and Dutt families were also recognized for their valuable contributions, unwavering commitment, and visionary leadership. Fred and Bernice Hansen’s daughter, Karen DeBlaay, currently on the IBOAI Board, commented, “Now I better understand how important the IBOAI is for the Business and how the Founding Families had the foresight to create an Association sixty years ago. I am thrilled to accept this award on behalf of the Hansen family.”
Kathy Victor remarked, “The IBOAI is not just a passion for Jody and I, serving on the Board is a calling.” Jody Dutt, Jere and Eileen’s son, humbly accepted the Dutt Family award, by thanking everyone in the room for the special recognition.
Following the awards, Bill Hawkins invited everyone to join him in a toast. “Even though we’re sixty years old, we still have promises to keep, miles to go, and many lives to touch with this Business. It’s wonderful we’re all about people. It’s the spirit of the Business. Let’s raise our glasses to the employees at Amway, past and present Board members, and the Founding Families.”
Vinny Pappalardo, IBOAI Vice Chairman, wrapped the presentation up with his poignant personal story of how the Business saved his life – and kept his family together.
Following dinner, a coffee bar and array of luscious desserts awaited guests in the Family Suites on the 26th floor.
Guests were surprised by thoughtful gifts during the celebration. A distinctive Leatherology journal bearing an engraved 60th Anniversary emblem awaited guests in their hotel rooms. During dinner, additional gifts were delivered: A silver Tiffany frame showcasing the photo taken of the guest(s) during the Welcome Reception. Also, a chocolate bar and thank-you note, a mini cake, and 60th Anniversary emblem slippers.
IBOAI Closes June 2019 Board Meetings with Words of Gratitude
Following Bob Andrews’ prayer of thankfulness, Chairman Howie Danzik opened the closing session of the IBOAI Board meetings citing the productivity and positive work of the Board members, the Marketing Advisory Committee (MAC), and Corporate staff. Howie said, “It’s been another great week together and I appreciate all of you and your hard work.” He also recognized his wonderful Vice Chairman, Vinny Pappalardo, and the G2 and G3 guests who add so much to the committee discussions. Howie remarked, “I’d like to give a special thanks to Jim Ayres, the Managing Director of Amway North America (ANA) who has done a lot of great things for us.” Jim clarified, “It’s not me who has done a lot of great work, it’s the ANA team. I’ve been in corporate strategy discussions this past week advocating for ANA. My team tells me there were positive and lively discussions in this week’s meetings on several topics like social commerce. I’d like to compliment all of you for engaging in these Business discussions. We need to have these conversations so we can move the Business forward together.”
Representing IBOAI Governance & Oversight, Bill Hawkins and Jody Victor both spoke briefly. Bill expressed how truly grateful the IBOAI is to partner with ANA executives, Jim Ayres and Rajneesh Chopra. “You’ve done such a good job communicating with us and your willingness to talk about difficult subjects has made a huge difference. Our strong relationship with you is going to make ANA stay a shining star in the Business.” Jody Victor paid tribute to the Founding Families and thanked the G2 and G3 guests who participated in IBOAI Board committee meetings during the June session. He also recognized the hard work and commitment of the IBOAI’s CEO, Kathy Victor: “We certainly owe you a great deal of thanks!” Howie Danzik was quick to echo the sentiment.

IBO Leaders attend Amway NAGC in California, June 2019
Top IBO leaders from North America, many who currently serve on the IBOAI Board, participated in exclusive strategic meetings and extraordinary activities at North American Growth Council (NAGC) 2019. The week-long event to honor these elite IBO leaders was held at the luxurious Resort at Pelican Hill, overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Newport Beach, California. NAGC attendees took part in strategic discussions and important business planning with Amway executives. They were also treated to unique experiences such as driving Porsches on a racetrack, learning to dance with the stars, and flying by helicopter to a Final Night Celebration on world-famous Rodeo Drive.
New Platinums Tour IBOAI® Offices on NPC Arrival Day
For the new Platinums attending their first official Amway sponsored IBO event, arrival at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 23 was incredibly exciting. Now that they’ve achieved their first major milestone in the Business, new Platinums are eager to learn more about building a successful, sustainable Business during the conference. Following the event registration, attendees were invited to tour the IBOAI offices, located in the hotel’s adjoining office building.
IBOAI staff greeted IBO visitors warmly throughout the afternoon and walked them through the IBOAI office, explaining the origin, purpose, and structure of the Association. New Platinums were thrilled to meet Howie Danzik, the current IBOAI Chairman, who flew in especially for this event. Not only were Platinums pleased to talk with Howie, they were delighted to have photos taken with this highly respected IBO Leader.
The most spacious meeting room, referred to as the American Way Association (AWA) board room, is named after the original Association. Amway Co-founders Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel made it clear that the IBO was their first priority when they, along with Founding Families, formed the AWA in 1959, which many years later became known as the IBOAI. The spacious room is frequently utilized by the entire Board, and regularly by the Legal & Ethics Committee.
The additional board rooms, named after the Association’s Founding Families – Hansen, Victor, and Dutt – are also where current Board members, along with Corporate staff, give birth to great ideas and smart solutions for the Business. IBOAI staff informed visitors, the IBOAI Business Operations Committee gathers in the Hansen room, the Marketing Advisory Committee (MAC) gathers in the Victor room, and the Awards & Recognition Committee in the Dutt room. During tours, IBOs listened attentively, raising questions regarding the functions of each committee and commenting on the generous thought and time contributed by Board members. Joey and Loowa Boayes, of Vancouver, Canada, remarked, “We love how the IBOAI honors the history of the Business. They’re really bringing Rich and Jay’s vision to fruition. It makes us feel like we’re in good hands!” Jess Gordon, from Bloomington, Delaware, commented, “Learning about what the IBOAI does and how they hold themselves to the highest standards is impressive. The offices are firstclass, too.” Her husband, Josh Gordon, added, “We don’t have to worry about the next 60 years. We now know it will be great!”
As Platinums heard about what each IBOAI Board committee discusses on behalf of all IBOs, and learned directly from the IBOAI Chairman how strong the working relationship is between the Board and Amway executives, the emerging Leaders were not only impressed, but many expressed they were inspired and motivated to continue building their Businesses. Scott and Kelli Beck of Charlotte, North Carolina, said, “Although we don’t know everything that goes on behind the scenes, we value the hours and hard work the Board puts into making this Business what it is. It makes us want to work harder.”
Kamal and Pragyna Biswasroy of Edison, New Jersey, remarked, “We just know the products and the Amway website. It is amazing to be here and get an idea of all that goes into operating the Business by the IBOAI and Corporation. This is fantastic!”
As new Platinums exited the IBOAI offices, they were given a goody bag packed with supplies for their busy week ahead.
